It is like the edge of the sword.

One hundred and forty three years ago today, one of the greatest leaders, and influencers, the world has ever seen was born.

Mahatma Gandhi needs no introduction when it comes to the role he played in the independence of India through his leadership in civil rights. In fact, his impact was so much that his birthday is celebrated as a National Holiday in India, officially called Gandhi Jayanti.

So today, on Gandhi Jayanti, I’d like to share some of my favorite and most inspiring quotes by the man himself: Mahatma Gandhi, also known as Bhapu.

Blaming the wolf would not help the sheep much. The sheep must learn not to fall into the clutches of the wolf.

I am conscious of my own limitations. That consciousness is my only strength. Whatever I might have been able to do in my life has proceeded more than anything else out of the realization of my own limitations.

I have learnt through bitter experience the one supreme lesson to conserve my anger, and as heat conserved is transmuted into energy, even so our anger controlled can be transmuted into a power which can move the world.

Defeat cannot dishearten me. It can only chasten me… I know that God will guide me. Truth is superior to man’s wisdom.

My faith is brightest in the midst of impenetrable darkness.

I have never lost my optimism. In seemingly darkest hours hope has burnt bright within me. I cannot kill the hope myself. I must say I cannot give an ocular demonstration to justify the hope. But there is no defeat in me.

The golden rule is to act fearlessly upon what one believes to be right.

The history of the world is full of instances of men who rose to leadership by sheer force of self-confidence, bravery and tenacity.

What will tell in the end will be character and not a knowledge of letters.

Truth resides in every human heart, and one has to search for it there, and to be guided by truth as one sees it. But no one has a right to coerce others to act according to his own view of truth.

What is faith worth if it is not translated into action?

Fearlessness does not mean arrogance or aggressiveness. That in itself is a sign of fear. Fearlessness presupposes calmness and peace of mind. For that it is necessary to have a living faith in God.

It is not literacy or learning which makes a man, but education for real life.

Knowledge is limitless and so also the application of truth. Every day we add to our knowledge of the power of the Atman, and we shall keep on doing ever the same. New experience will teach us new duties, but truth shall ever be the same. Who has ever known it in its entirety?

Bravery is not a quality of the body, it is of the soul.

Heroes are made in the hour of defeat. Success is, therefore, well described as a series of glorious defeats.

I claim that human mind or human society is not divided into watertight compartments called social, political and religious. All act and react upon one another.

True art takes note not merely of form but also of what lies behind.

Conversion is a matter of heart and reason. An appeal to heart and reason can only be made through conduct.

Man is the maker of his own destiny, and I therefore ask you to become makers of your own destiny.

Forgiveness is the quality of the brave, not of the cowardly.
